Leah’s large scale paintings are inspired by the Canadian landscape: the mountainous regions, coastal imagery of both the Atlantic and Pacific and the many beautiful areas inbetween those coasts. Back home in her Toronto studio, Leah sifts through countless photographs accumulated on her travels, often casting them aside and relying on recollections of the amazing sensory experiences nature has made available to her. Then she faces a blank canvas and gradually builds the image, with a general idea in mind of the scene she intends to convey. While it is not possible to reproduce on a painted canvas the sounds of seabirds over the Gulf of St. Lawrence, or the gentle lapping of the sea on a lonely, cold day on the shores of Gros Morne, Newfoundland or the fragrances of a natural garden in a Vancouver Park, Leah attempts to reflect what she can of the visual scenes she has enjoyed.
